Fractured Flower Trivet Pattern | Double Knitting Made Fun

by Carla A. Canonico

Spring always makes me want to swap in a few cheerful touches around the house, especially in the kitchen, where everything feels brighter the moment color shows up. This project is a small knit with a big personality. The Fractured Flower Trivet is double-knit, sturdy, and made to be used, so it’s perfect for adding a handmade pop of garden joy to your table. It’s also a lovely way to build skills without committing to a large colorwork piece.

The Fractured Flower Trivet pattern by Cynthia MacDougall was featured in A Needle Pulling Thread Magazine Issue 59, with the theme, Inspired by Gardens. Issue 59 explores blooms and foliage across quilting, embroidery, crochet and knitting. The issue introduces beautiful techniques such as double knitting, intarsia, and lacework, making projects feel refreshing and full of good vibes.

This trivet design brings together techniques from the previous Knit Together articles, including adapting the flower motif from Issue 57, using the striped I cord from Issue 58, and finishing with the double-knit piece featured here. It can be used before or after a wash to full the fabric.

Why this project is exciting to make is that it’s small, practical, and technique-packed. You get the joy of colorwork, the satisfaction of a sturdy double-knit fabric, and you end up with a handmade piece that actually gets used every day.
