Knitting Staghorn Cables for an Envelope Pillow Cover

by Sue Sindrey

This week, I’m making a pillow cover with honeycomb stitch on the front and staghorn cables on the back, using UNIVERSAL YARN Thula. Earlier in the week, I used the honeycomb stitch for the front side, using a modified honeycomb pattern to allow growth from the center out. Yesterday, I started the first piece of the back side. Because this is an envelope-style pillow cover, this side is made in two overlapping pieces. I cast on 74 stitches and worked in alternating cable and stockinette sections to about 7”, ending on row two, then worked 1” of ribbing.

And here’s the upper piece finished! I love how the cables complement the honeycomb stitch on the front!

UNIVERSAL YARN Thula in the Delphinium colorway has great stitch definition for staghorn cables.

Here’s the staghorn cable pattern I used for 74 stitches.

Staghorn Cable Pattern

Row 1: K3, *C4F, C4B, k4* repeat 5 times, C4F, C4B, k3.

Row 2: Purl.

Row 3: Knit.

Row 4: Purl.

Ribbing

Row 1 (RS): *K2, p1* repeat 24 times, k2.

Row 2 (WS): *P2, k1*repeat 24 times, p2.

Now I’ll make the second larger piece the same way by working the cable pattern to about 15” before the ribbing. This piece should measure 16” total to allow for lots of overlap as the insert I’m using is quite puffy in the middle, and the honeycomb side has less give. The cables will run in opposite directions on the top and bottom pieces. I can’t wait to see how it looks!

UNIVERSAL Yarn Thula has great stitch definition for any stitch! Join me tomorrow to see what the finished staghorn cable side looks like and the finished final product!
