Reversible Knitted Christmas Tree Ornament | Uptown DK & Noelle Yarn

by Sue Sindrey

This week, I’m making a series of Christmas tree ornaments I designed using yarns from UNIVERSAL YARN Uptown DK and UNIVERSAL YARN Noelle. Each ornament is a double-sided picture frame with a different version of an image on each side. Yesterday’s ornament, Reversible Knitted Holiday Word Art Ornament, had holiday expressions embellished with overstitching and holly add-ons. Today, I’ll be making an ornament to honour the beloved Christmas Tree!

Yarns and Tools for the Christmas Tree Ornament

My VIVACE Knitting Tote in Fluorescent Yarn Balls is a fantastic way to keep everything I need organized.

7 balls of yarn, a knitting tote, a package of embellishments on a brick fireplace.

These are all the UNIVERSAL YARN Uptown DK and Noelle yarns I’m using to make this week’s series of Christmas ornaments.

Knitting the Picture Inlays

Today I’ll decorate the same Christmas tree two ways and change the background color to represent day and night. Remember that I’m using a tighter gauge by using a smaller needle size of 3.25mm.

I’ll make the picture inlays by knitting the chart below. I’ll cast on the number of stitches indicated in the chart in the background color, work the chart, and then cast off in the background color. Download the Christmas Tree Ornament Pattern Chart  here.

For this ornament, I’ll make one with a White background and the other with Bachelor Blue. I’ll stitch the tree trunk with Elida, the greenery with Cedar, and the tree topper with Linette. Here’s what the inlays look like.

Decorating the Tree with Overstitching

I’ll decorate the tree with the white background by creating overstitched balls using double-stranded threads of Bittersweet, Bachelor Blue, Elida, and Linette. For the tree with a blue background, I will use overstitched balls made from Bittersweet and Linette. Additionally, I plan to add garlands made from single strands of Elida and Linette twisted together.

To finish, I will place a larger gold tree topper bow made from double-stranded Linette at the top of the tree.

Framing the Ornament in Garter Stitch

I’ll use Elida to make the garter stitch frame. I’ll knit the first row of each inlay on double-pointed needles separately first. This prevents a wrong side dotted line when adding a new color.

I’ll join the two sides of the ornament on the second row by knitting one stitch from each side together. If you wish, batting or thin craft foam board can be added between the inlays.

I’ll also add a stitch on either side of each corner stitch on every other row to prevent the corners from curling as the frame gets larger. To finish up, I’ll add a single chain crochet hanger and stitch it to each top corner of the frame.

With all five ornaments finished, there are several ways to use them. They can be hung on the tree, added separately to wrapped gifts, hung at different lengths as door hangers, or strung across a fireplace mantel garland.

I hope you enjoyed the five reversible knitted ornaments I designed this week: Vintage Christmas Bulb, Elf Shoe, Christmas Wreath, Holiday Word Art, and Christmas Tree.

The range of colors from UNIVERSAL YARN Uptown DK allowed me to choose the right shades and add a tonal effect to some of the greenery.

The metallic gold and silver from UNIVERSAL YARN Noelle added a holiday sparkle to each ornament.

Extra holly add-ons from DRESS IT UP Christmas Embellishments, Holly Jolly Christmas, provided another level of pizzazz!

And my VIVACE Knitting Tote in Fluorescent Yarn Balls let me to take this project with me, with enough room for all the colors I needed.

Now I need to curl up in front of my cozy fireplace adorned by my ornaments! See you next time!
