Reversible Knitted Christmas Wreath Ornament | Uptown DK & Noelle Yarn

by Sue Sindrey

This week, I’m making picture-frame Christmas tree ornaments from a series I designed inspired by special Christmas moments. Yesterday, I made the Elf Shoe Reversible Knitted Christmas Ornament using UNIVERSAL YARN Uptown DK and UNIVERSAL YARN Noelle inspired by the beloved holiday movie Elf.

Today, I’ll make the Christmas Wreath ornament. When I think of holiday home decor, I think of the holiday wreath. A simple swirl of evergreen can be decorated in so many ways!

Yarns and Tools for the Wreath Ornament

I’ll create tonal greenery in the wreath by using both Lime and Cedar from the Uptown DK line. I’ll use White, Bittersweet, Bachelor Blue, Elida and Linette for the background and overstitched embellishments. My VIVACE Knitting Tote in Fluorescent Yarn Balls has more than enough room for all of the different colors of yarn I need for this project.

7 balls of yarn, a knitting tote, a package of embellishments on a brick fireplace.

These are all the UNIVERSAL YARN Uptown DK and Noelle yarns I’ll use to make this week’s series of Christmas ornaments.

Knitting the Picture Inlays

First, I’ll cast on in white and make my first inlay according to the chart below. See below for downloading your copy. This ornament only needs one chart.  When I make the second inlay, I’ll substitute the white background for blue. Then I’ll make a second inlay using blue as the background color. I’m using a tighter gauge, using 3.25mm for this project, as it will provide more structure and a crisper image. Download the Christmas Wreath Ornament Pattern Charts here.

Here are the two inlays. I think the white makes me think of daytime, and the blue one of nighttime.

Adding Bows, Garlands, and Berries

Next, I’ll decorate each wreath differently. On each wreath, I’ll use double-stranded threads of Bittersweet and Linette to create the bows on each wreath. I’ll create garlands for the blue background wreath by twisting single strands of Elida and Linette and wrapping them around the wreath.

Then I’ll add smaller berry decorations with double-stranded threads of White, Bittersweet and Linette. The height of the dk weight yarns provides a 3-D effect!

Framing the Ornament in Garter Stitch

I’ll make the garter stitch frame the same way as in yesterday’s elf shoe ornament in Bittersweet. I’ll be using two sets of double-pointed needles in 3.25mm and 3.5mm. Another option is to make each of the four sides of the frames separately and then stitch them together at the corners once the frames are complete. The garter stitch would then be worked back and forth instead of in the round with double-pointed needles.

I’ll pick up and knit the first row on each of the four sides of each image separately. Then I’ll place the wrong sides of the inlays together and knit the sides together. Flat batting or thin craft foam board can be inserted to help support the ornament’s shape, if preferred.

I’ll continue working in garter stitch in the round by purling the next row. When I reach the third row, I’ll add one stitch on either side of each corner stitch with m1 or yo (8-stitch increase per increase row).

I’ll keep working the garter-stitch rows for a total of 8 rows, adding increases on the knitted rows, then cast off. Then I’ll make a hanger for the ornament by making a single chain crochet and stitching it to the top corners of the ornament.

I really enjoyed exploring different ways to use UNIVERSAL YARN Uptown DK and Noelle yarns. They are so versatile! Join me tomorrow for the next Christmas ornament, HO HO HO / Joy!
