This week, I’m making ornaments I designed using UNIVERSAL YARN Uptown DK and UNIVERSAL YARN Noelle. Yesterday’s ornament, the Reversible Knitted Christmas Wreath Ornament, had wreaths decorated two ways. Because the holidays are filled with familiar expressions, today’s ornament, Holiday Word Art, will feature two of the happiest holiday expressions: Joy and HO HO HO!

Yarns and Tools for Today’s Ornament
I’ll use the same tonal technique for holly leaves as I did in yesterday’s Reversible Christmas Wreath Knitted Ornament by stitching Uptown Dk Lime and Cedar randomly. I’ll stitch the letters with Bittersweet on a White background. Overstitched decorations and holiday lights that meander through HO HO HO will be created using Cedar, Bachelor Blue, Elida and Linette. Some extra holly add-ons are provided by DRESS IT UP Christmas Embellishments Holly Jolly Christmas. My VIVACE Knitting Tote in Fluorescent Yarn Balls is a cute way to carry everything I need. There’s lots of room for the yarn I’m using, and there are practical compartments to keep my needles and tools organized.

These are all the UNIVERSAL YARN Uptown DK and Noelle yarns I’m using to make this week’s series of Christmas ornaments.
Knitting the Picture Inlays
Remember that a tighter gauge is achieved using a smaller needle size such as 3.25mm. The basic picture inlays are knitted using the charts below. Cast on the number of stitches indicated in the chart in the background color, work the chart, and then cast off in the background color. You can also download the Holiday Word Art Charts here.

Adding Stitching Details
On the JOY side, I’ll use a double-stranded thread of Linette for small dots of gold on the holly. I’ll also sew on some holly embellishments with a needle and thread by placing the thread in the grooves of the holly leaves.
On the HO HO HO side, I’ll use a single-stranded thread of Cedar and stitch it around the letters to make the cord of the holiday lights embellishment. I’ll make the lights with double-stranded threads of Elida, Linette, and Bachelor Blue and stitch three stitches in a triangle shape for each bulb. I’m not using any particular embroidery technique and am just having fun with freehand stitching.

Framing the Ornament in Garter Stitch
Now I’ll make a garter stitch frame. I’ll pick up and knit the first row in Bittersweet on double-pointed needles. I’ll join the sides on the second row to prevent any dotted lines that happen when a new color is added. I’ll add stitches on either side of each corner stitch every other row to prevent the corners from curling as the frame gets larger. I’ll stitch a single chain crochet hanger to each top corner of the frame.
These ornaments have me singing Christmas carols to myself! UNIVERSAL YARN Uptown DK and UNIVERSAL YARN Noelle really allowed me to get creative with overstitching on a simple design. Join me tomorrow to see what the last ornament will be… and for some ideas on how to display them.
