Soft Tiles Cushion Cover: Mosaic Knitting Extravaganza!

by Carla A. Canonico

Fresh project for your spring decor, coming right up! If you’re in that in-between season mood where you want your home to feel lighter and brighter, this knitted cushion cover is such a satisfying way to refresh a room without a big makeover. Soft Tiles uses mosaic knitting to create a cushion cover that looks like richly patterned tiles, and the clever part is that the back is a negative image of the front by reversing the colours.

This project by Nancy Lekx was featured in A Needle Pulling Thread Magazine Issue 61, with the theme inspired by tilework across the needle arts. In knitting, Issue 61 explores tilework through lacework and mosaic knitting, and even calls mosaic knitting a perfect technique to try as a “larger swatch” by making a cushion cover. (ANPTmag)

From the pattern listing, here’s what you can expect: it includes a materials list, and the knitting instructions are written and charted. The sample uses Universal Yarn Deluxe DK Superwash in 828 Pulp and 814 Petrol Blue, and the two pieces can be sewn together with a blanket stitch using both colors held together, or you can choose an invisible seam and add a zipper for easy laundering. Why this is an exciting project to make is that it gives you a bold, modern result with a technique that looks complicated but feels totally doable once you get into the rhythm. And when you pop it on a chair or sofa, it instantly reads as fresh for spring.
