Knitting Sleeves and a Button Band for the Cozy Atlas Cardigan

by Cristina Simionovici

In my previous post, I wrote about knitting the body of the Cozy Atlas Cardigan with UNIVERSAL YARN Linear, and finishing it with a twisted rib at the bottom edge.

Today it’s time to grab my VIVACE Tote, where I store my knitting, my needles, my yarn, and everything else I need for this project, and I’m binding off the body of the cardigan.

The body is now finished; it’s time to pick up the sleeves’ stitches. I pick up stitches around the armhole, one stitch for each knitted row. For the saddle shoulder area, I had live stitches that I knitted across.

The stitches picked up for the sleeves on a knitting needle.

Knitting the Sleeves

The sleeves are knitted in the round, with no decreases up to the cuff. That will create a roomy sleeve, puffed around the cuff!

I didn’t switch to shorter needles as I used the magic loop method. And round and round the sleeve I knit to its full length.

In the last row before the cuff, there is a sharp decrease by knitting two stitches together for the whole round. If the number of stitches is odd, you will need to add an additional round to decrease by one stitch. For the twisted rib cuff, you’ll need an even number of stitches.

After finishing the first sleeve, repeat all the steps for the second sleeve. There’s not much exciting knitting for now, but the result is exciting for sure!

The cardigan is almost ready; there’s just one more step: the button band.

Knitting the Button Band

I start by picking up stitches for the button band along the right front, across the back, and along the left front. I picked up stitches at a 3:4 ratio; therefore, pick up 3 stitches for every 4 rows.

The button band is knitted in the twisted rib as well and has a buttonhole row in the middle.

Make sure the buttonholes are evenly spaced on the straight side of the front, not in the V-neck area.
