The Cozy Atlas Cardigan Takes Shape with UNIVERSAL YARN Linear

by Cristina Simionovici

In yesterday’s post, I started to knit the Cozy Atlas Cardigan using the UNIVERSAL YARN Linear. I finished my saddle shoulders and continued by knitting the back. Once I connected the saddle shoulders pieces to the back, I continued in stockinette stitch.

There’s some shaping along the armhole, and I keep track of the number of rows by carrying a strand of helper yarn (the coral yarn in the pictures). A row counter will come in handy if you do not use the helper yarn method.

I must knit to the armhole length, and after that, I can pick up stitches for the right front. For the front, there is shaping around the armhole, and AT THE SAME TIME (the dreaded phrase in a pattern), I must increase for the V neck. This is a time when I must focus on knitting, counting rows and stitches to make sure the front of the cardigan looks good. No TV knitting for now.

After finishing the right front to the length of the armhole, I repeat the process for the left front of the cardigan.

Once I reach the armhole length for both fronts, I can connect all pieces and continue with the body.

As there are no more increases or decreases, I can knit relaxed in stockinette stitch. I can listen to a podcast or an audiobook or even watch a few episodes of my favorite series while I knit across the many stitches of the body. The body part of the cardigan is also a great social knit; I can meet fellow knitters at our knitting group gathering and chat while working on the body.

The Twisted Rib Bottom Edge

And in no time, I knitted the whole length of the body. It’s time to knit the twisted rib bottom edge of the Cozy Atlas Cardigan. The twisted rib requires a little bit more attention, as my hands will revert to the regular rib if I don’t focus.

This ribbing will add more structure to the cardigan, and it will be mirrored in the twisted rib on the cuffs of the sleeves. It’s not just a nice detail but also a useful one, enhancing the cardigan’s structure with a yarn that has some drape.

Join me tomorrow as I pick up the sleeves’ stitches for the Cozy Atlas Cardigan in UNIVERSAL YARN Linear in the Sketch colorway.
