Final Thoughts on the Sunshine Throw in Mystical Marl Yarn

by Sarah Dawn

And, with the weaving in of all the ends, the Sunshine Throw is finished! Stashbusting 1500yds of Mystical Marl Yarn took a bit of time, but I think the result was worth it!

After a long bout of knitting, the Sunshine Throw in Mystical Marl Yarn is done!

What started as a project designed to stash-bust a lot of Mystical Marl Yarn turned into a hugely fun project where I got to customize the Sunshine Throw pattern into something slightly different, and all it took was adding a second colour of yarn!

Two clear bags of UNIVERSAL YARN Mystical Marl. One bag in “Lagoon”, which is a bright blue-teal, and the other bag in “Midnight”, which is a dark blue-grey

What do you do with lots of extra Mystical Marl Yarn? You make a Sunshine Throw, of course!

Not to get too philosophical, but I think this highlights something very important in the yarn world. You’re not bound to the pattern, and you’re not bound to the yarn the pattern says.

Part of the creativity – I’d even dare say the blessing – of the yarn world is that you can take the pattern and make it your own. You can add stripes, change out the edging, pick different stitch patterns, or pick a very different yarn. All of that lets you make something completely original to you, and I absolutely love that about the world of knitting.

Sometimes you make those choices just because you like them better. Sometimes, you make those choices on a more practical level, as I did, because I had a whole lot of Mystical Marl Yarn and needed something to make with it!  But I very much hope that this little blog series gives you the confidence to add stripes to your own knitting, as well – it’s a great way to get bigger projects if you don’t have enough of one colour, or you can go wild and use many colours!

With that said, the final blanket verdict is: I love it! The Mystical Marl yarn drapes wonderfully in the blanket, and the cotton/acrylic blend means it’s warm and comfy without feeling ‘smothering’. Plus, I really do love the feel of this yarn; I think it’s because it’s an anti-pilling acrylic. So having that soft, cozy feeling in blanket form is just a bonus!

At the end of the day, this is a yarn substitution I’m one-hundred percent happy with, and safe to say I’m happier with this yarn than I would be with the original Cotton Supreme the pattern called for! So don’t be afraid to make a project your own with substitutions, you’ll often find something you like even more!

Go forth and enjoy your knitting – and make it your own!
