Knitted Seafaring Cables Pullover: 1 pattern, so many options

by Carla A. Canonico

After knitting the sculptural texture of Fan Vaulting Beret, let’s cast on something bold and ocean inspired with striking cable diamonds.

If you’re craving a fresh project that feels like a deep breath of salty air, this one is pure coastal daydreaming. Seafaring Cables Pullover by Cynthia MacDougall features cables that evoke the open sea, with garter- and stockinette-stitch cable diamonds that show up beautifully in a smooth double knitting weight yarn. It’s the kind of sweater you knit once and then keep reaching for, because it is cozy, wearable, and full of detail without feeling fussy.

I actually knit the cropped sample of the Seafaring Cables Pullover for the magazine you see here; the whole experience was quite exciting. It’s a pattern that challenged my attention span and taught me patience, and I didn’t mind slowing down to get every part of it right! My daughter has worn it many times, and the pullover has become one of her favorites. Now that’s worth knitting for! I will eventually knit one up for myself…

From the website description, here’s what you get with the pattern: a materials list, charted instructions, written instructions, and a schematic. The design offers variations between the unisex and cropped versions that can be mixed or matched, plus a choice of four necklines and two options for knitting the back. It was knit with Universal Yarn Donnina Superwash, and the choice of yarn is part of what makes the stitch definition shine.

If you made this pullover, would you knit the cropped version or the unisex version, and which neckline would you choose first?

What makes this project so exciting is that it blends bold cables with customization options for the back, so you can truly make it your own.
