After the sweet, timeless Waterfall Sweater by Marie Greene last week, I’m moving from a little knitted wardrobe to something wonderfully dramatic for ours.
September is a great time to think about layers again, and the Twists of Fate Colourwork Knit Cape by Sue Sindrey certainly isn’t ordinary. Its bold, stranded motifs, beautifully shaped yoke, and generous sweep through the body give it presence, while the cape silhouette makes it wonderfully easy to layer over autumn clothes.
I especially like how the colorwork appears to twist and travel across the yoke. There’s plenty here to keep an experienced knitter interested, and once the colorwork is complete, those generous increases create the flowing shape that makes this cape such an eye-catcher.

Sue designed this advanced colorwork cape to be worked seamlessly from the top down. The shaping begins through the yoke, where twisting stranded motifs create the focal point of the design, followed by generous increases that give the lower portion its beautiful movement and fullness.
Stitch pattern charts are included to guide both motif placement and color changes. That structure is especially helpful in a project with this much visual impact, allowing the knitter to concentrate on the rhythm of the stranded pattern while watching the design gradually emerge.

What I love about the Storybook Stitches theme is how differently each designer interpreted the idea of storytelling. Some projects suggest mystery, others whimsy or nostalgia, but each demonstrates how fabric, thread, or yarn can create a narrative of its own. Issue 72 is really about turning imagination into something lasting and beautifully handmade.
