After admiring the mosaic-inspired elegance of Tiles and Tesserae Wrap by Nancy Lekx last week, I’m moving from an elegant golden wrap to a light and airy knit made for sunny summer days.
I had so much fun photographing the She Wears Seashells Cover Up by Denise Powell for the ANPTmag Summer 2014 issue. The lovely models featured throughout this issue are sisters, and two of them are twins. Their warmth, personalities, and natural connection made taking the photographs and building the stories around the projects especially enjoyable. This breezy cover-up is such a clever piece of summer knitting. Its open mesh fabric is light enough to slip over a swimsuit at the beach or pool, while its graceful shape also makes it an attractive layer for a relaxed summer outfit.

The She Wears Seashells Cover Up begins with a sideways knit yoke. After the yoke is completed, stitches are picked up, and the mesh sleeves and body are knitted downward. This construction gives the project an engaging rhythm and allows the airy lacework to flow from the more structured upper section.
Denise even suggests knitting a coordinating pair of seashell earrings to complete the look! It’s a playful detail that turns the cover-up into a complete handmade summer ensemble and offers another opportunity to celebrate its seaside inspiration.

The pattern for the cover-up and its matching seashell earrings appeared in the ANPTmag Summer 2014 issue, published before we began assigning individual themes to every issue. This edition was inspired by the desire to relax, rejuvenate, and take a welcome break from a busy schedule. Its assortment of approachable projects was designed to keep creative hands happily occupied without making summer stitching feel demanding.
The issue invites makers to create something for themselves or for someone who could use a little comfort. Along with beautiful beach cover-ups, it offers knitting, quilting, sewing, and other needlework projects filled with the easygoing spirit of summer.
