After last week’s Statement Cabled Headband by Sarah Dawn, I’m staying with cozy accessories, but moving into a much roomier layer that’s perfect for cooler weather.
The Rick Rack Poncho and Cowl by Flo Flory from ANPTmag Issue 49 is a great layering project for kids and tweens when the weather turns chilly. It gives them cozy warmth without the bulk of a heavy sweater or coat, making it especially practical for school days, weekend outings, and those in-between temperatures when they need an extra layer but still want plenty of freedom to move.
The poncho’s relaxed shape allows plenty of movement, while the matching cowl adds extra warmth around the neck. Together, they create an easy, comfortable outfit that feels polished without being complicated.

The Rick Rack Poncho and Cowl combine texture and easy shaping to create a practical cold-weather set. The poncho offers warmth through the shoulders and body without the weight or restriction of a heavier garment, while the cowl can be worn together with it or on its own.
That flexibility is one of the nicest features of the set. On a milder day, the poncho may be enough. When the temperature drops, add the cowl for extra warmth around the neck without adding a lot of bulk.
ANPTmag Issue 49 featured the design, an issue inspired by rainy days and the creative pleasure of slowing down indoors. The issue celebrates projects that make a cozy day at home feel productive and comforting, with quilts, game-inspired designs, and warm knitted pieces that are ideal for relaxed making and wearing.
Rick Rack Poncho and Cowl fits that mood beautifully. It’s practical enough for everyday wear but still interesting enough to make the knitting feel rewarding from beginning to end. Make it colorful!

This pattern is relatively easy. It’s a textured stitch pattern with relaxed poncho construction, making this an enjoyable project to knit.
What colorway would you knit this combo in, colorful or a neutral colorway to go with everything?
