Dreamy Relaxation Socks

Yesterday we talked about the general benefits of Dreamy yarn and how it makes an awesome blanket. Today, we’re going to look at a smaller project. Socks are one of the most requested hand knit items. With the Relaxation Sock pattern from Red Heart, you won’t have the heart to say ‘no’ to a request and you won’t want to. Mostly what discourages people from knitting socks is the yarn size. Fingering weight yarn will make a very functional sock, but Dreamy yarn will make something really special.

I wouldn’t want anyone to think the only thing Dreamy yarn is good for is blankets and throws. The Relaxation Sock pattern is knit as a tube with an after thought heel, which is a fantastic technique. If you’re not sure how to do it, this is the perfect time to learn. Bigger yarn and a larger project will make the structure easier to see.

The toe here has been Kitchener stitched, or grafted, shut. It looks as though the end has been knitted shut, but it’s all in the grafting!

The sock itself is a very easy pattern to follow. It’s knit from the cuff down with a 1×1 rib, then it switches to a 2×2 garter rib for the body. This consists of knitting one complete round, then switching to a 2×2 rib and repeating those two rows.

When you get down to the toe you simply use decreases to shape it, and graft the ends together. If you’re not sure how to graft stitches this is, again, a really useful technique to learn. There are some really great YouTube videos about grafting. If you were to simply search grafting sock toes, you would be able to find exactly what you’re looking for. I know there are a lot of different variations, but I don’t like recommending one in particular because everyone learns differently. Some may be auditory learners where a video with a lot of talking would do well for them, while others may be visual or mechanic learners where they just have to see it done and do it themselves. Start going through videos and one of them will make it click for you.

Doesn’t this look like the coziest sock you’ve ever seen? It certainly feels that way.

These Relaxation Socks would be the perfect gift to put in a basket with a book, some tea, and a mug. Perhaps for Mother’s day? It’s never too early to start thinking about future holidays and birthdays.
